The one where I take a mosaics class.

Art Classes

Maverick Mosaics

Me & Becks

I'm a homebody to my very core. As much fun as concerts, plays, and coffee dates are, I just love being in my home with a good book, craft, or season of 30 Rock.

One of the greatest truths about friendship that I learned from Gretchen Rubin's The Happiness Project is simply showing up.

So when my friend Becky forwarded a Groupon for a mosaics class, I jumped at the opportunity to try something new and spend a few hours with her.

Did this take more effort than reading another chapter of The Girl Who Played with Fire in my comfy chair? Sure, but I know that growing myself and taking care of my friendships is more important.

Wall Art

The artwork on the wall was so pretty and inspiring.

finished product

The finished product! (They had to send us home with grout since it takes 24 hours to dry.)

While I don't think I'm going to become a professional mosaic artist anytime soon (it's a lot harder than I thought & gluing all those little pieces takes forever!), I had a wonderful time with Becky.

Have you tried something new lately?

  1. The final product came out great! I honestly wouldn't be able to tell yours apart from any other professionally done mosaic. It looks like you ladies had a ton of fun. It makes me want to take a class with my best friend now.

And I couldn't help but notice your titles are very similar to the Friends episodes titles. Was that intentional? Because I love Friends!

  3. This weekend, my boyfriend and I are taking a sushi making class with sake tastings! YAY!

FYI: Love the way the mosaics turned out! Awesome!

  4. Ahhh, I've always wanted to take a mosaics class - and I've never even heard of Maverick Mosaics. I'm going to have to check that out. Working with glass is fun (and a little scary) - I've taken classes in stained glass and glass beadmaking over at the Torpedo Factory. I love the finished pieces and thanks for the reminder to just show up!

  8. Wow, how fun! I would love to take more art classes. I agree with you on showing up. Sometimes I dread stuff, but as soon as I get to where ever I am supposed to be, I have a great time, and I'm glad I went :)

  9. Oh my goodness, those are gorgeous! :o We're total homebodies too, but every now and than we definitely make the effort to go out and do something interesting. So fun! Lately I've been getting into digital scrapbooking. SO fun!!! (Okay, so this is still in my house... Oh well!)

  10. I love that you're getting out there and trying new things! That's what makes life interesting :)

My mom was into mosaics a few years ago! She made a gorgeous bird bath that is now in their backyard. I love the colors you chose!

I've been really itching to take a cooking class lately! I think it would be fun to polish my skills and learn some new ones.

  11. Oh I so get the whole showing up/trying something new business. It's so easy to stay in our comfort zones! But it looks like you had a nice time! :)

  12. This looks like so much fun! I would love to try mosaic tile making. I haven't tried something new in too long now, and I need to. Your post inspired me to think about getting out of the house more and doing stuff with girlfriends.

I really have been wanting to join a running club and have been nervous to try it...so maybe that's something in my near future.

  16. I love the final products! I made mosaic tile art in middle school in my gifted-and-talented class. We weren't allowed to cut pieces ourselves, so we had to make do with the already-broken pieces our teacher provided, but it was still fun and mine turned out alright.

  17. Beautiful! Good for you for branching out :) BTW 30 Rock is also my comfort show!

  18. These are awesome! I'm such a homebody too, and definitely have to 'force myself out', but if I'd get results (or opportunities) like these...I would definitely get out more!

  19. I am the complete opposite of homebody. And *all* of my friends are homebodies. I always feel so annoying when I constantly ask them to come out of their caves to do something with me haha.

Your mosaics are so pretty! All of those tiny pieces do look tedious to glue on! As for me trying something new, I took an intermediate knitting class (thanks to Groupon, as well) to learn new techniques :)
