The one with the hair challenge.

5 days

Last Thursday I was doing my hair just like I always do. For some reason, though, I ended up looking like Mary Tyler Moore (and not in a good way). I was frustrated and already late, so I put my hair in a side ponytail. That simple act put a new spring in my step - almost like wearing a new outfit, but without spending any money.

I realized I was in a hair rut, same style day in and day out. So to shake things up, I challenged myself - 5 days & 5 styles.

First, I needed to collect inspiration.

((Side note: Pinterest doesn't just have to be DIY's and recipes. A lot of people I follow use it to store hair and makeup inspiration too. It's a great resource!))

And the outcome...

  • Day 1: This look was inspired by my little sister Summer. She is a master of hairstyles, especially texturized, beachy waves.
  • Day 2: I followed this updo tutorial. ((This youtube beauty guru is a great place to get new ideas. Her videos are very professional.))
  • Day 3: Ballerina bun. This might have been my favorite day! I found this style on Lauren Conrad's new beauty site The Beauty Department.
  • Day 4: I attempted to replicate the Katie Holmes messy side ponytail.
  • Day 5: Bangs! Tried to channel a little Zooey. :)
All-in-all, the challenge was a success. It got me to step outside of my box, and now I have some new styles to throw in the mix.

So what about you? Do you have go-to styles?

Happy Friday!

That is all.

All my awesome blog bling is from Pugly Pixel!

  1. My go-to style is just throwing it in a low ponytail, but lately I've been trying to mix it up, too. Thank you for the links and inpiration!

  2. My go-to is a side ponytail, but since I do it ALL the time (and since I am almost 28!) I think it's time for me to switch it up. : ) I would love to try that ballerina bun - it's so cute! And you look gorgeous as usual. Good for you for venturing outside of your comfort zone and thank you for sharing!

  3. SO pretty, I love them! My hair is short so I can't do as many things with it. My go to style is just to let the natural curl do its thing.

  4. I love the side pony and the ballerina bun. And those bangs looks so cute on you!

Lately, I've been wearing the same style, since I Don't really know what else to do with my stacked bob. Suggestions? I don't mind though, because I've had long hair for so long that this haircut still seems new to me everyday.

  5. You look so pretty with all of them! I love the bun and the up do, I should really do more with my hair as its so much longer now.

Also, you're making me want bangs again :)

  6. So pretty! You have such gorgeous hair. I will have to check out the up do youtube video. What a great way to challenge yourself. I either wear my hair down and curly or in a ponytail. Nothing too fun.

  7. I've been in a hair rut FOREVER.

I'm trying to grow it out, but don't have enough time in the morning to style it, so it usually gets put in a messy bun while it's still wet :(

I've been trying to figure out the ballerina bun for a while now, hopefully this helps!

    They all look stunning!

  8. Nice! My go-to "style" (and I use that term very loosely) is to pull it back in a pony tail that my kids can't pull at, and to just rely on my bangs to make it all look somewhat chic (a word I also use loosely). Boring, I know...

  11. I love your little challenge, all the styles look super cute on you, too! I don't really have a go-to "style"... My hair is naturally curly/wavy/fizzy... so I straighten it all the time & always wear it straight & down. I really want to try & be more creative though ;)

  12. you look great in ALL these styles! your hair seems to be so versatile :)

  13. Ashley, you are so gorgeous! Your hair is lovely and all these styles are so flattering on you!

My go-to style is just my pixie cut. I can't do much with it other than add fun flowers really so I basically do the same thing every day. That's part of the reason I cut my hair, though, so it doesn't make me too sad :)

  14. LOVE IT! My hair looks exactly the same, every single day, & I confess that I never really even think of doing anything else with it... Seems like a lot of work!

  17. You look gorgeous in all of these photos! good for you for recognizing a rut and getting yourself out of it! I definitely need to find some inspiration and practice some new styles. My main problem is never leaving enough time in the morning to get ready. How much time do you all for yourself in the AM?

  18. i must do this challenge!!
my hair is pretty boring! straight down almost every day...and growing out my bangs makes things a bit more difficult!

  19. I love all of them! I tried Lauren's ballerina bun, but mine wasn't nearly as cute as yours!

  20. You are the cutest! I need to try that updo ASAP. It's too hot to wear my hair down every day!

  22. Gahhhh! I ADORE this idea! Perhaps I'll have to challenge myself to do one of my own. I'm very much a creature of habit and have convinced myself that many fun hairstyles just won't "work" with my hair. But you've definitely inspired me to give it a whirl!

You are pretty. Have I told you that lately?

  31. Ohh!! All of these are so great!! You look amazing in each one! My go-to style (especially when my hair is dirty) is milk-maid braids or two messy buns in the back! :)

  32. This is such a cool idea and the result is awesome! I do love the ballerina bun. I have three hair styles basically;
    - bangbangs
    - up high
    - sunny side
...if you see what I mean...

  33. Super cute! I definitely have this problem and have actually considered paying my stylist extra to give me a tutorial. And then I get cheap ;)

  34. So cute!! I know what you mean about a hair rut - I've never been one to do a lot with my hair. I'm just not good at it, and as a result I get bored with it really quickly, especially when it's long (all I seem to do is put it in a ponytail). I absolutely love the styles you chose - I'd love to replicate them on myself!

  39. Eek! All of these styles are lovely! My favorite is the side ponytail. It's so simple yet so clean and classy. This really makes me miss my long hair. I loved throwing it up in a big messy bun, or a single side braid.
