The one with all the pie.

VA is for Lovers

My girlfriend, Mintra (pictured above), is such a sweet soul. She's kind and caring - the type of person I could call at midnight and know she would drop anything just to talk with me. She and I have a lot in common too, namely skin care, makeup, and nutrition (a girl's favorite topics right?). If you are curious if a new fad diet is really worth all the hype, Mintra is your girl. But, while we like to talk healthy food, Mintra is the queen of sweets. I get all my best D.C. cupcake recommendations from her, so when I began thinking about her upcoming birthday, I knew we needed more than just an average birthday cake.

Through a mutual friend we had been hearing about the best pie place in all Virginia. Unfortunately, it is located almost an hour away from us, so we had yet to try it. So I planned a mini road trip to Roundhill in celebration of Mintra's birthday.

Let me just tell you...the hour drive to The High Hill Country Store was well worth the 5 fruit pie we ate. ;)

County Crafts

Pie

sephora

Hello Kitty

New Nail Polish

After we ate our pie and opened presents, we walked around the cute country store (think Cracker Barrel but a little more authentic). I do think we stood out as city girls a little bit. Not a 100% sure why, but it could have been standing in the middle of the store, holding our iPhones out, and saying, "I don't have reception! How am I going to check into Foursquare??" ;)

Peanut Brittle

Pie Candles

I would recommend the store to anyone in the area. It is also attached to a cute winery and art store.

US Mail

polka dots

Domo

Also would you believe that my friends still complain about me bringing my camera everywhere? You think they would know the drill by now. :)

So what about you? Do you have a favorite local spot that would put a chain store to shame?

That is all.

  8. This sounds awesome. There's a place near my hometown like this, called Hartford Kitchen & run by lots of old Amish people. Everything about it is divine.

  10. Being in the same county as it, I have been there before. Well, that and my friend was dating a guy who worked there. But anyways, I haven't been there since high school and I have never actually tried their pies so every time the hubby and I pass it, I point it out to him and tell him we need to go. This post has motivated me all over again. Maybe I will pick up a pie for fathers day. That's the next pie worthy holiday.

  11. this made so happy! I just love hearing about fun adventures with friends, and especially to celebrate a birthday. looks like some really good times!! I want pie now too :)

there is an amish bakery in pickens, sc, about 30 minutes away from us, that I've heard is amazing. pickens is the kind of place with the reputation that everyone owns a gun, some chickens, and maybe a pitbull. but I'm sure the amish are peaceful souls!

  14. Sounds like a great day and a fun birthday celebration. I had to laugh at the part about not having cell phone reception, welcome to my world. =) I would much rather support indie type shops over big chains any day.

  22. Mmmmm...pie! My favorite local place opened about 2 years ago or so, and they are like an upscale diner/creamery. They make all their ice cream & everything that goes on it, and they have such great food..their burgers & sweet potato fries are so good. They have fun things like bacon ice cream & basil lemonade. They also sell baked goods. And have a good beer selection. It's pretty amazing overall :)

  24. San Francisco is filled with a ton of amazing local places that would put any chain place to shame. In fact, SF has banned chain stores. One of my fav. local places to grab a bite in my neighborhood is Mission Pie. Fresh pies everyday and all the ingredients are grown at local farms :) http://missionpie.com/

I say "Seriously" and "That is all." All the time. I also often follow "that is all" with "GOOD DAY!" lol. Enjoyed spending some time in your corner of the blog world. Your husband is a cutie!

  28. complaining?! of course they should know by now--5 years from now they'll be so glad you helped document time for them. speaking of cameras--what do you use, i love these. i use a canon eos 60D and love it--it's still so far beyond my capability, but i love it nonetheless.

my brother went to uva so i must tell you i have a special place in my heart for va---if i could get married anywhere and it wasn't in europe, it might just be in your gorgeous state.
